Aston Villa appoint Villarreal boss Unai Emery as new head coach

In a surprise announcement, former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been named as the new head coach of Aston Villa.

As a result of Villa's 3-0 Premier League defeat last week to Fulham, the 50-year-old Spaniard succeeded Steven Gerrard, who was sacked as manager after the team's defeat.

It is expected that Emery will take over at Aston Villa from November 1 2022 following the completion of the work permit formalities. Emery joins Aston Villa from Villarreal.

Emery will be in charge of his second Premier League club after managing Arsenal for 18 months before he was dismissed after a seven-match losing streak in the league.

It was expected that Emery's contract with Villarreal would expire at the end of the current season. Reports have claimed that Villa will have to pay approximately £5m to the La Liga club as part of their buy-out deal.

As stated by Aston Villa in a statement recently, the club is pleased to announce that Unai Emery will join the club as its new head coach on a permanent basis.

With over 900 matches under his belt, he is one of the most experienced top-level coaches in the world. Additionally, Unai has also enjoyed significant success in other football clubs, including Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain.
